Fees
We serve a clientel of small business people. They rarely want to know any more than they need to do their work.
They break things and stuff happens. They call and we run and fix their stuff.
All rates are per hour, portal to portal. I have decided to make rates reflect the knowledge needed for
the particular tast. This is to make it easier to start work for small business people in my area (Bayshoe Area
of NJ) and to promote the other work I am able to do and it has worked well for me.
A Philosophical Aside: We have been encouraged to use a single higher rate by other consultants. We notice
they have fewer choices and less work than we do - so far. They argue if you are worth a rate it should apply to
all your work. They add that working lower rate jobs tends to get lower rate referals. We observe that they wait
without billable hours for a lot of their time. In contrast, we get many referrals that are for the better paying
work based on the manner in which we work and the number of our satisfied customers..
Hourly Rates: The minimum rate is $40 for normal PC stuff where the OS or an application does not work.
We bill $50 for those with networks but not using any client server databases. Work on a file server with multi-user
record locking is $60.
Reasonable Database Design: Database design depends on whether we get System Administrator (SA) work at
the end. If the project does not include SA work, we bill $75 for design and specification. Otherwise, when a project
includes SA work, we discount the SA work to give an efective rate $50 for the design hours. This is accomplished
by billing the SA work at $25 for a number of hours equal to the design time thus giving a credit of $25 for each
hour of design time.
Database Code Fees: When we write code it is at $90 per hour. It is important to understand that we do not
write code with any regularity so it tends to make the total cost more than the cost of a programmer who bills
$150.
NOTE: A programmer usually writes tighter-more-efficient code but you may wait a month for the project to get scheduled! In contrast, we can usually brute force working, if not efficient, code in a couple days to a week if time is of the essence.
Preferred Approach
Preferred Approach: We prefer to set up a programmer with inputs and data sources, show processing of the data needed to get output info, and give output screens. This lowers the total cost and improves the result for clients by allowing the programmers to do what they do best. This approach takes advantage of our business savvy and entrepreneureal skills often lacked by programmers.
